What is a skirting board and what role does it play?

A skirting board is a decorative and protective strip fixed to the base of a wall, running along the floor. It integrates seamlessly with the flooring, creating a smooth transition between the floor and the wall. How do you choose the ideal skirting board?

The choice of skirting boards depends on several criteria:

• The height: It varies between 6 and 15 cm. A taller skirting board adds character, whilst a lower one remains discreet.

How do you fix a skirting board?

Skirting boards can be installed using several methods, suited to different materials and wall types. Each technique offers its own specific advantages.

Adhesive bonding

Before you begin, ensure that both the wall and the skirting boards are clean and dry. If necessary, dust them with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Apply a suitable adhesive (such as mounting adhesive or acrylic sealant) in small beads or evenly spaced dots along the back of the skirting board to prevent any overflow.

Press the skirting board firmly against the wall, align it and apply gentle, even pressure along its entire length. Full drying typically takes between 12 and 24 hours: avoid any handling during this period.

Nailing

This method, solid and long-lasting, is particularly well suited to fixing solid wood skirting boards.

If you are working on plasterboard, first locate the studs to ensure a secure fixing. Mark the fixing points, then position the skirting board against the wall. Drive in thin nails or pins every 30 to 40 cm using a hammer or pneumatic nail gun. Should any nails protrude, tap them flush with a nail punch.

Finally, apply wood filler to conceal the holes, smooth the surface, then paint or varnish for a perfect finish.

Fixing clips

This technique allows for easy installation and removal of skirting boards whilst ensuring a secure fixing. To begin, drill holes at regular intervals along the skirting board, typically spaced 40 cm apart. Then position it against the wall and mark the location of the holes using a pencil. Once this step is complete, drill into the wall at the marked points and insert suitable wall plugs (fixing clips) appropriate to the surface type. When everything is in place, position the skirting board and secure it with the appropriate screws. Take care not to overtighten, so as to avoid any distortion of the material.
