How to choose and maintain your lawn: sowing, mowing, watering and seasonal care

A dense and vigorous green space transforms a property’s appearance by structuring its outdoor areas. Landscaping your garden requires agronomic consideration, going beyond simply scattering seeds. Creating a uniform plant cover calls for an analysis of the soil and local climate. This grassy cover limits erosion, cools the atmosphere in summer through evapotranspiration and provides a recreational surface suitable for outdoor activities. To achieve a long-lasting result, the lawn requires precise seed selection, targeted nutrition and regular maintenance throughout the year.

Understand the difference between lawn and turf

Before beginning any earthworks or substrate preparation, semantic clarification is needed to guide your botanical choices. The difference between a lawn and grass lies in the floristic composition, the level of aesthetic expectation and the intended use of the space. The term "grass" refers to a mixture of selected grasses, sown to create a visually uniform, short and dense carpet. This landscaping is characterised by a carefully controlled aesthetic, reminiscent of sports pitches and free from unwanted plants. It requires frequent interventions such as cross-scarification and the application of targeted mineral fertilisers, combined with irrigation via a system of buried spray nozzles.

By contrast, a grassland consists of an expanse of natural or semi-natural grasses, accommodating greater biodiversity. This space welcomes white clover, daisies, dandelions and moss in its shaded areas. As a whole, it is subject to a less intensive maintenance regime, copes with infrequent mowing and requires few external inputs. This hardy vegetation cover withstands periods of summer drought thanks to the resilience of the native species that make it up. Determining the appropriate term associated with the objective of your project will guide you towards the right cultivation practices. This step will define the level of technical expertise required for its development.

Select the best grass according to your climate constraints

Identifying suitable seed varieties is key to the longevity and resilience of your lawn. The best lawn is made up of the blend of grasses best suited to the shape of your ground, taking the expected foot traffic into account. Mixtures sold by seed suppliers combine three to four complementary species to balance speed of rooting, disease tolerance and leaf fineness. Perennial ryegrass, the basis of traditional mixes, often germinates in less than a week under favourable conditions. It withstands frequent foot traffic and resists moderate mechanical uprooting, making it suitable for play areas or pedestrian walkways.

If your garden is in full sun or your soil is very sandy and does not retain water well, it is essential to choose a seed mix containing tall fescue, a grass that is highly resistant to drought. This hardy variety develops a root system reaching up to 30 centimetres deep, ensuring survival during prolonged water stress. Smooth meadow-grass, meanwhile, provides underground regenerative capacity thanks to its creeping rhizomes, gradually filling in bare patches over time. If the topography of your plot, shade from large trees or a lack of time prevents you from maintaining a living ecosystem, installing a high-density artificial lawn (exceeding 2500 grams per square metre) is a technical alternative. This solution provides a consistently attractive appearance, eliminates the need for watering and guarantees a green surface all year round.

The rules for successful sowing for lasting establishment

Creating a natural grass-covered open area begins with mechanical preparation of the substrate. Turning over the soil to a depth of 15 to 20 centimetres encourages the future roots to establish deeply. This ploughing operation, carried out with a spade or rotavator, makes it possible to remove protruding stones, break up compact clay clods, and incorporate an organic amendment such as mature compost. The final levelling, carried out with a rake or cultivator, should result in a flat, crumbly surface, without hollows liable to retain rainwater or hinder the progress of mowing equipment. Check your soil's pH: acidic soil (pH below 6) encourages moss to appear, requiring an application of agricultural lime before sowing.

The period chosen for sowing affects the germination rate of the seeds. Opt for early autumn, between September and mid-October. At this time, the soil retains the heat accumulated during the summer, while regular rainfall maintains a constant moisture level, helping the seedlings to emerge. Spring sowing remains possible between March and April, provided you plan for artificial watering as soon as heatwaves appear. Follow the dosage indicated by the manufacturer, between 30 and 40 grams of seed per square metre, measured using scales. Over-seeding causes competition for light and nutrients, resulting in the spindling of young shoots. Finish by passing over a roller (weighing approximately 40 kilograms) to ensure direct contact between the seed and the soil.

Master mowing and watering for lawn care that suits your needs

Maintaining a green, even surface requires regular care at consistent intervals. Lawn maintenance revolves around managing cutting height. Mowing below 3 centimetres weakens the plant’s physiology, exposes its crown to the summer sun and accelerates the evaporation of moisture held in the soil. Adopt a cutting height of between 5 and 7 centimetres. This height preserves the strength of the grass blades, increases their photosynthetic surface area and creates a shaded zone at the base, limiting the germination of competing weeds. Using a petrol or battery-powered lawnmower equipped with a mulching function returns nutrients to the soil, providing a natural fertiliser while protecting the roots from desiccation.

The management of irrigation requires a rational approach, favouring spaced-out watering over light, superficial daily sprinkling. Providing 15 to 20 litres of water per square metre once a week forces the roots to descend into the lower layers of the soil in search of moisture. This controlled water-stress technique develops a plant that is resilient to climatic variations. Programme your automatic watering cycles at dawn, between 4 am and 6 am. This time slot reduces losses caused by evaporation. It prevents thermal shock to foliage heated by the midday sun and avoids the overnight stagnation of moisture, the main cause of fungal diseases.

Aerate, fertilise and weed a lawn methodically

The biological cycle of a grassed area leads, over the course of the seasons, to the formation of a layer of thatch at the base of the blades. This layer of organic matter, mixed with old, undecomposed clippings, reduces the substrate’s gas exchange and limits the infiltration of nutrients. To restore soil permeability and facilitate the penetration of irrigation water, scarification is required at least once a year, preferably at the beginning of spring. This mechanical operation cuts into the soil to a depth of 2 to 3 millimetres, removing moss and stimulating the lateral branching of grasses. Follow this aeration with top-dressing, consisting of spreading a thin layer of silica sand to improve the drainage of the area.

Mineral nutrition forms the other pillar of a maintenance strategy. Applying organic fertiliser in the form of slow-release granules, in April and then again in September, ensures a supply of macronutrients. Opt for a nitrogen-rich formulation in spring to support leaf growth, then switch to a potassium-dominant balance in autumn to strengthen cell tissues before the winter frosts arrive.

To maintain the consistency of your landscaping without using synthetic plant protection products, incorporate these practices:

  • Manually remove tap-rooted plants using a long metal weeding tool to extract the root system.
  • Pour boiling cooking water from your vegetables over the centres of weeds located along patio edges or gravel paths.
  • Apply a spray of diluted nettle tea to strengthen grasses’ natural defences against pests.
  • Reseed bare patches with a coated grass seed repair mix to prevent colonisation by unwanted species.

These remedial actions, carried out consistently, are enough to weed a lawn while respecting the biology of your soil and preserving the wildlife in your garden.
