What is a raised planter box?

A planter box on legs is a practical solution for easily growing flowers, aromatic plants or small vegetables, even in a limited space. Elevated by its structure, it allows you to garden comfortably whilst making it easier to tend to your plants.

Thanks to its height, the raised planter box minimises the effort required for planting, watering or harvesting, making it particularly accessible to beginners in gardening as well as more experienced enthusiasts.

How to prepare a raised planter box?

Drainage

Good drainage is essential to prevent excess water, which can damage the roots. It is recommended to place a drainage layer at the bottom of the trough, representing approximately 20% of its height. This layer can be composed of clay pebbles or pumice, two materials that help absorb excess water whilst maintaining good soil aeration.

The growing medium

The choice of compost will depend on the type of plants you wish to grow. Specific composts are available for aromatic plants, vegetable garden crops or Mediterranean plants.

To enrich the soil, you may also add a mixture of soil and compost, which will provide the nutrients necessary for your plants.

It is advisable to group together in the same planter box plants with similar requirements in terms of water, sunlight and maintenance. Should you wish to grow different varieties, raised vegetable garden planters with compartments can be an excellent solution.

Finally, covering the surface of the compost with mulch or decorative stones helps to limit weeds and retain soil moisture.

Which vegetables can be grown in a raised planter box?

The choice of plants depends primarily on the depth of the trough.

  • 15 to 30 cm depth: ideal for aromatic plants such as basil, chives or parsley, as well as lighter crops such as lettuce or strawberries.
  • 30 to 45 cm depth: suited to vegetables requiring more water and root space, such as cucumbers or courgettes.
  • More than 45 cm: allows for the cultivation of larger vegetables such as tomatoes or certain root vegetables.

With a raised planter box, creating a practical and attractive kitchen garden becomes effortless, allowing you to enjoy fresh produce directly at home.
