      Why maintain your mattress regularly?

For healthy nights, do not neglect the maintenance of your mattress. Several reasons explain why it is indispensable to take care of it on a daily basis.

The cleanliness of your mattress has a direct impact on your health

A poorly maintained mattress can become a real nest for allergens over time. Dust mites, invisible to the naked eye, proliferate in your bedding. They cause allergic reactions in some people, such as sneezing, itching, or asthma attacks.

Moisture, on the other hand, promotes the development of mould as well as bacteria inside your bed. This persistent moisture can induce skin irritations as well as respiratory issues. Cleaning your mattress as often as possible is the solution for sleeping in a healthy environment.

Regular cleaning of your mattress extends its lifespan

The lifespan of a clogged or dirty mattress is significantly reduced. Dust and stains can alter its performance, its comfort, as well as the quality of its manufacturing materials. Continuous care of your mattress allows you to eliminate all these impurities but also to preserve your bedding in the long term. By performing frequent cleaning of your mattress, you avoid potential sagging.

A well-maintained mattress preserves your quality of sleep

Sleeping on a clean mattress considerably improves your comfort as well as your nightly well-being. A healthy bedding setup limits bad odours coming from perspiration and the accumulation of bacteria. Your sleep will be vastly improved. Taking care of your mattress is your guarantee for peaceful nights.

How to maintain your mattress on a daily basis?

For a restful sleep, count on a well-maintained mattress! Here are some useful tips to keep your mattress in good condition over the months.

      Air out your bedroom daily

Every morning upon waking, open the window to refresh the air in your bedroom for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Airing out helps sanitise your bedding. It limits the appearance of mould by evacuating excess water vapour.

During the night, perspiration seeps into your bed. Without proper ventilation, the presence of moisture promotes the development of dust mites as well as bad odours.

      • Our advice: Once a week, strip the sheets completely. Let the mattress breathe in the open air for an even more effective result.

      Use a mattress protector

Protecting your mattress means avoiding many hassles! A waterproof, anti-dust mite mattress protector limits the infiltration of sweat, dust, and bacteria into the mattress fibres.

For optimal hygiene, wash the protector regularly, ideally every two weeks. This simple action limits the proliferation of allergens and extends the lifespan of your mattress.

Flip your mattress as often as possible

With use, a mattress experiences sagging and consequently loses comfort. To limit advanced wear, we recommend rotating or flipping it every three to six months.

Is your mattress double-sided? Alternate between the two sides to balance the pressure exerted on the fibres. Conversely, if your mattress model is non-reversible, simply rotate it from head to toe.

Avoid eating or drinking in your bed

The advice seems obvious, but it is still necessary to remind ourselves. Snacking in bed can damage your mattress more quickly. Crumbs attract bacteria, and spilled liquids risk infiltrating your mattress (especially in the absence of a protective cover).

To reduce the risk of stains and to keep your bedding healthy, avoid snacks under the duvet!

How to deep clean your mattress?

Even when paying special daily attention to your mattress, impurities eventually accumulate. Dust mites, stains, odours, etc. Fortunately, simple and natural solutions exist to restore its freshness and cleanliness. Apply our best techniques to easily deep clean your mattress effectively!

Easily eliminate dust and dust mites

Dust mites absolutely love mattress fibres! They settle there in large numbers if nothing is done to eliminate them. The first step of a good cleaning is therefore to vacuum the entire surface of the mattress at least once a month. To do it right, use a suitable attachment (ideally a soft brush so as not to damage the fibres).

Do not forget to vacuum the edges and seams, nooks where dust accumulates discreetly. For these areas, a simple damp cloth wiped gently allows you to remove embedded impurities.

      Deodorise naturally with baking soda

Quite normally, during prolonged use, unpleasant odours are released from your bed fillings. Cleaning your mattress with baking soda is your best ally for an effective refresh! How to proceed?

      1. Sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface of the mattress.
      2. Leave it to act for two to four hours until odours are neutralised and moisture is absorbed.
      3. Vacuum to remove the baking soda powder.

      Clean stains effectively

How to clean a stained mattress? Whether it is sweat, urine, or even blood, a mattress rarely escapes stains. How do you eliminate these unsightly, smelly rings?

      • For sweat stains: Apply a mixture of water, white vinegar, and baking soda to your mattress. Rub gently with a microfibre cloth. Allow to air dry.
      • For urine stains: Absorb the excess immediately with a dry cloth. Apply a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Leave to act for 10 minutes, then rub with a clean cloth.
      • For blood stains: Avoid using hot water at all costs, as it sets the stain. Prefer a mixture of cold water and soap, or hydrogen peroxide. Dab gently until it is completely eliminated.
      • Our extra tip: In the event of an accidental stain, do not delay! Treat it immediately to prevent it from setting into the fabric.

Disinfect your bedding with natural products

An effective cleaning of your mattress also involves its complete disinfection. To be healthy, bedding must be free of micro-organisms or pathogens.

Our express solution consists of mixing 50% water and 50% white vinegar in a spray bottle. Apply over the entire surface of the mattress, then let it dry.

For a deep disinfection solution, expose the mattress to the sun for a few hours if possible. UV rays destroy bacteria and will thoroughly sanitise your bedding.

      • Our anti-moisture tip: If your mattress is regularly exposed to moisture, add a moisture absorber in the room to prevent the formation of mould.

A few extra tips to extend the lifespan of your mattress

Even with periodic maintenance, a few complementary actions can make all the difference in keeping a mattress healthy, durable, and comfortable.

Use essential oils for a soothing effect

For a fresh mattress protected against dust mites, using essential oils is a great alternative. Before vacuuming the baking soda used to deodorise the mattress, add a few drops of lavender essential oil to it. This oil is renowned for its sanitising, antibacterial, as well as relaxing properties.

Other essential oils such as tea tree (a powerful antifungal) or eucalyptus (purifying effect) can also be used to reinforce the anti-dust mite action.

Avoid too much moisture in your bedroom

A mattress does not like moisture. It leads to the proliferation of dust mites, mould, as well as bad odours. To avoid this problem, we recommend maintaining a humidity level between 40% and 60% in the bedroom.

If the air in your room is too humid, use a dehumidifier or place a moisture absorber near the bed. Airing out your sleeping space daily and avoiding placing the mattress directly on the floor are other solutions for optimal preservation of your bedding.

      Change your mattress if needed

Even with proper maintenance, a mattress wears out over the years. We recommend replacing it every 8 to 10 years. Certain signs never lie: visible sagging, the appearance of aches upon waking, a feeling of discomfort, or the proliferation of mould. If you notice any of these signs, it may be time to invest in a new bed to rediscover a restful sleep.

At Vente-unique, we provide you with a wide range of mattress models adapted to all body types. Explore our offers to test your future mattress.
